Skating Admission

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • Children under ten (10) years of age must be supervised by a parent/guardian who is at least fourteen (14) years of age.
  • Children ten (10) years of age and older do not require supervision.
  • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certified hockey helmets are required for all shinny and hockey shoot around participants. Additionally, participants aged eighteen (18) and under must also wear a full face cage.​
  • Hockey gloves and a hockey stick are mandatory for all shinny participants.
  • Full hockey equipment is strongly recommended.
  • ​Slap shots and body checking are strictly prohibited.​​
  • Participants are not permitted on the ice while the ice resurfacer is in operation.
  • Private lessons/coaching on the ice surface is strictly prohibited.
  • Single blade skates are the only type of footwear permitted on the ice.
  • Spectators are only permitted in designated viewing areas.
  • All accidents or injuries must be reported to staff immediately.
  • The City of Brampton Good Behaviour Guidelines​​ must be adhered to at all times.
  • Participants with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by individuals knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision.​​​​​

  • Participants eighteen (18) years of age and older do not require supervision.
  • Participants fourteen (14) to seventeen (17) years of age:
    • Shinny: no supervision required
    • Parent & Teen Shinny: direct supervision by a parent/guardian who is on the ice, wearing proper equipment and able to render immediate assistance if necessary.
    • Participant to parent/guardian ratio is 3:1.
  • Participants ten (10) to thirteen (13) years of age:
    • Shinny: no supervision required
    • Parent & Youth Shinny: direct supervision by a parent/guardian who is on the ice, wearing proper equipment and able to render immediate assistance if necessary.
    • Participant to parent/guardian ratio is 3:1.
  • Participants nine (9) years of age and younger:
    • Shinny: a parent/guardian is required to maintain visual contact with the participant and remain within the arena enclosure. Participant to parent/guardian ratio is 10:1.
    • Parent & Child Shinny: direct supervision by a parent/guardian who is on the ice, wearing proper equipment and able to render immediate assistance if necessary.
    • Participant to parent/guardian ratio is 3:1.
  • Where the word “Parent” is in the title of the drop-in program, parents must be on the ice with skates. 
    • Refer to the Parent/Guardian Supervision ratios stated above.
  • When the word “Parent” is not in the title of the drop-in program, parents/guardians are not permitted on the ice but must maintain supervision requirements for participant(s) under 10 years of age. 
  • Participants with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by individuals knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision.

A properly fitted helmet is an important piece of protective equipment and is required for participation in City of Brampton skate programs. Here are some tips to ensure you have a properly fitted helmet: 
  • Make sure the helmet fits snug with little movement 
  • The helmet must have a Canadian Standards Association sticker (CSA) 
  • There should be one finger width space between the eyebrows and the rim of the helmet 
  • The helmet should fit flat on top of the head 
  • Ensure the helmet chin straps are clipped together 
  • No more than two fingers should fit between the chin and straps 
  • A full face cage is recommended

To assist skaters in the beginning stages of development, skate ​aids may be available/permitted during Public Skates and Beginner Skate sessions. 

The following will be enforced in order to ensure participant safety and enjoyment:

  1. ​Participants using skate aids must wear a CSA certified hockey helmet with full facemask.
  2. Participants may use their own skate aids provided that:
    • ​The device is a manufactured skate aid (eg. homemade teaching aids are prohibited);
    • The skate aid does not damage the ice surface, have sharp edges, and/or be an obvious hazard; and
    • Patrons are responsible for the safety and security of their own equipment.

To encourage participation, the use of Personal Assistive Mobility Device (PAMD) is allowed at all public access programs (unless otherwise stated).  

The following will be observed in order to ensure participant safety and enjoyment:

  •  ​It is strongly recommended participants using PAMD's
    • Wear a CSA certified hockey helmet with full facemask; and
    • Ensure that their equipment does not interfere with other programs, participants, or impact the safety of others
  • Parents/Guardians/Support Persons are responsible for all participant transfers, as they are the most familiar with the individual’s physical conditions and proper methods of handling and carrying.
    • Staff are not permitted to transfer participants.

Note: Chairs, hockey sticks, strollers, toboggans and other such equipment/devices are not to be used as a PAMD.

The Region of Peel’s Outdoor No Smoking or No Vaping By-law 49-2019​ bans smoking or vaping of any substance, such as tobacco, recreational and medical cannabis, shisha etc. on or in:  

  • Outdoor public places such as parks, swimming pools, trails or paths, and sports fields
  • Outdoor municipal properties such as libraries, recreational centres, community centres, transit facilities and municipal offices ​

  • No skating backwards or performing figure skating maneuvers.
  • No skating against the flow of other skaters.
  • No skating erratically or excessive speeds.
  • No standing idle on the boards.

  • ​No lifts are allowed.
  • No synchronized team practices, though individuals can practice routines individually.
  • Music will not be played.
  • Jump harness are not permitted.
  • Coaching is permitted, however the coach must pay if they are on the ice.

The following are the general admission standards that apply to all Drop-In Public and Beginner Skate programs:

  • Participants under the age of ten (10) must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian who is at least fourteen (14) years of age:
    • ​Parents/guardians must maintain visual contact with those they are supervising and remain in the arena enclosure at all times.
  • CSA approved hockey helmets and full facemasks are strongly recommended for all skating participants.
  • Single blade skates are the only type of footwear permitted on the ice during Figure Skating Drop-Ins .
  • Participants with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by individuals knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision.

  • ​No horseplay.
  • No spraying or throwing snow.
  • No food/drink, headsets, cellphone, or other handheld electronic devices are permitted on the ice.
  • No carrying of other (e.g. babies or young children) while on the ice surface.
  • Private lessons/coaching on the ice surface is strictly prohibited.
  • All accidents or injuries must be reported to staff immediately.
  • The City of Brampton Good Behaviour Guidelines must be adhered to at all times.
  • Participants are not permitted on the ice while the ice resurfacer is in operation.

  • ​Program participants are required to have a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved hockey helmet. A full face cage is also recommended.
  • Single bladed skates are required and must be sharpened prior to the first class.
  • Double bladed skates (bob skates) and/or Skateez are not allowed on the ice during lessons.
  • Participants will have access to change rooms and/or benches in the arena. These designated areas are available for use to change into helmet, skates, and warm clothes.
  • Please avoid putting skates on in the lobby area as walking on tiles is unsafe and can dull skate blades.
  • Warm clothes and layers are required during lessons, which include a jacket, slush or snow pants, and mitts or gloves.
  • Skaters are encouraged to arrive 5-10 minutes before class starts in order to get dressed and ready for lessons.
  • If a skater is registered in a Parent and Child program, active participation of a parent/guardian (minimum 14 years of age) who is comfortable on the ice is required. Parents/guardians must also have single bladed skates, and a CSA approved hockey helmet.​

​Goalies (maximum two on ice) can play for free, registration must be completed in person at the customer service desk. Participants must show proof of participation as a goalie by bringing their goalie equipment with them to register.
