Project Update - 03/12/2025 - Phase 1 of the Susan Fennell Sportsplex Net-zero Carbon Retrofit project is nearing completion, with Rinks 3 and 4 set to reopen in April 2025.
As we move into Phase 2, additional upgrades will take place to complete the transformation into Brampton’s first-ever net zero carbon recreation centre. This next phase will require temporary closures of the below facility areas, beginning April 2025. The entire facility is anticipated to reopen by September 2025.

As part of Brampton’s commitment to reduce the impacts of climate change and achieve its net zero goal by 2050, Susan Fennell Sportsplex was selected as the City’s first net-zero carbon facility. Most of the equipment at the facility is also at the end of its expected useful life.

Q2 2024: Project retrofit
Q2 2025: Phase 1 construction complete
Q2 2025: Phase 2 construction has begun
Q4 2025: Project anticipated to be completed

During the first phase of construction, ice rinks 3 and 4 will be closed for approximately 12 months.

Project FAQ

When will Susan Fennell Sportsplex close for repairs? 
Phase Two of the Susan Fennell Sportsplex Net-zero Carbon Retrofit project will begin in April 2025. Some areas may close earlier depending on program needs and resources. 
How long will the closures last at Susan Fennell Sportsplex? 
It is expected that the facility will be fully operational by September 2025. Some areas may reopen earlier, depending on construction progress. 
Will rinks 1 and 2 stay open during the phase two closure? 
No. Rinks 1 and 2 will also be closed during Phase Two as part of the continued renovations. We recommend checking for updated information on available ice time at other facilities. 
Will the pool and fitness areas remain open during the closure? 
No. The pool, fitness center, and related areas will be closed during Phase Two. Alternative facilities offering swimming and fitness programs will be available at other City locations, such as Century Gardens Recreation Centre and Cassie Campbell Community Centre. 
Are other recreation centres extending hours to accommodate those impacted by the closure? 
No, but programming is still available at other Recreation Centres during the closure. Please visit www.brampton.ca/recreation for schedules and alternative locations.
Will the Youth Hub be closing during this renovation? 
Yes, the Youth Hub will be temporarily closed during Phase Two. However, some Youth Hub programs and services will continue as drop-ins at other City locations. For more information on available programs, please visit www.brampton.ca/recreation. 
How is the net-zero carbon retrofit being funded? 
This retrofit is funded through a combination of sources, including a $15.7 million Federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings grant and $10 million through the Green Municipal Fund’s Community Buildings Retrofit initiative. The City of Brampton is also pursuing additional grants and funding opportunities. 
Why was Susan Fennell Sportsplex chosen for the net-zero carbon retrofit? 
Susan Fennell Sportsplex was selected because recreational facilities account for nearly 50% of the City’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. The Sportsplex currently releases approximately 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to the emissions produced by 238 cars. 
What kind of energy-efficient technologies are being incorporated into the retrofit? 
The retrofit includes several sustainable upgrades, such as: 
- LED retrofits 
- Lighting controls 
- Ground source heat loop 
- Replacement of ice rink refrigeration plants 
- Solar thermal system for pool heating 
- Roof-top solar panels (Photovoltaic system) 
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades 
- Artificial Intelligence (JCI Open Blue Technology) 
How much money will this retrofit save the City? 
The City of Brampton is projected to save approximately $84,000 annually as a result of these energy-efficient upgrades.
Will City-run programs be impacted by these closures? 
Yes, there will be a reduction in the number of programs offered due to the closure of key areas. However, recreation staff are working to ensure that public access to other programs continues at available facilities where possible.
