Islamic History Month is recognized across Canada each October. The month is a time to celebrate and share the rich Muslim heritage and tradition. As well as a time to educate and learn about the profound contributions Muslims have made to Canada and society as a whole.
The theme for Islamic History Month 2024 is Health and Healing, which lets us acknowledge the contributions in sciences, humanities, medicine, astronomy and other disciplines that have benefited society. The pioneering work of Muslim physicians, scientists and scholars laid the foundation for modern healthcare practices and shared approaches to healing and wellness that still resonate with us today.
But healing is not limited to the body. It also extends to the mind in the form of mental health supports and to our society.
Islamophobia and hate crimes against members of the Muslim community continue to present themselves in our communities and institutions. For Black Muslim community members, they experience both religious intolerance and racism.
Together, we must combat all forms of discrimination, Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence directed at Muslim communities across the country.
