The Black community has a history of commerce for more than 300 years, prior to 1619, when the first Africans were brought to America. Long before the slave trade, Africans were among the first to explore the Americas and traveled the Atlantic Ocean currents that provided the trading passages.

The main goal of the Unit is to improve the economic status of the Black community. We are implementing this by:

  • Increasing job opportunities for our community
  • Offering training, education and networking opportunities
  • Working with different organizations to form, monitor and promote the Unit’s programs.
  • Providing enterprise ownership, management and control, employee equity, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise development, socio-economic development and qualifying small and medium enterprises.

The Unit also gives people access to loans for the development of businesses. In addition, the Unit requires that a significant percentage of the black community initiatives be under the Unit control.
