Citizen of the Year Awards​

The Citizen of the Year Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated all-round community involvement. This award recognizes a local resident who builds communities and shows what can be achieved with passion and determination. The Citizen of the Year Award is presented to a youth, adult and senior citizen.

​Eligibility

  • Nominees must:
    • Be a resident of the City of Brampton.
    • Has contributed to the enrichment of the social, cultural or civic life of the Brampton community.
    • Cannot be an elected official, a resident planning to run for municipal/regional council, or be staff of the City of Brampton.
    • Must be a current and active volunteer in the community.
    • Must present a positive image of the City of Brampton, can be viewed as a role model who consistently demonstrates responsible behaviour.
    • Participates regularly in community projects.
    • Shows evidence of on-going volunteerism, leadership and dedication.
    • The community contributions must have taken place within the calendar year prior to the end ​of the nomination window.

Notes:

  • A youth is considered 18 years of age and younger.
  • An adult is considered to be 19 years of age and older.
  • A senior is considered to be 65 years of age and older.
  • One individual will be selected in the youth, adult, and senior category.
  • Volunteer hours as required for secondary school graduation are not to be included when considering levels of contribution to the community.
  • Consideration will be given to citizens that demonstrate tenure in their participation and/or activism.​​
  • ​​The nomination form must be accompanied by a supporting letter of no more than two (2) pages, detailing the recent or ongoing activities or contributions of the nominee in the City of Brampton. These activities should demonstrate all-round community involvement rather than a specific activity or contribution. This letter and supporting documentation can be sent to citizen.awards@brampton.ca​.
  • Contributions must be voluntary but can be related to an individual’s expertise from training, work experience or education.
  • Special consideration will be given to nominees that have demonstrated a significant long-term impact (minimum three (3) years of service by a youth and five (5) years by an adult and senior) to be eligible.
  • The individual has helped to improve the quality of life in Brampton and/or have made an impact on Brampton in arts and culture, sport or community projects.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • Posthumous nominations will not be accepted.
  • Individuals that have received any Citizen Award in the past four (4) years are not eligible.
  • Successful recipients of the award will be required to submit a background check.
