October 5 to 12, 2024 - Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!
Having working smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent).
Many home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present or not working.
- Smoke alarms are not installed at all
- Smoke alarm batteries are removed
- Smoke alarms are dismantled/removed
- Smoke alarms are expired, therefore not functioning properly
The "KNOW" about smoke alarms:
- Installing working smoke alarms on every storey of your home (including the basement) and outside all sleeping areas
- Install smoke alarms in the bedroom area
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities
- Push and hold the test button monthly on all your smoke alarms
- Replace batteries and back-up batteries at least once a year, and/or when the low battery indicator activates
