Agree and Comply*

I understand and agree to comply with all of the regulations contained in the Animal Service By-law 201-2023, including, but not limited to:

  • A maximum of two backyard hens shall be allowed on the property
  • The keeping of roosters is strictly prohibited
  • A backyard hen coop shall be provided that is at least:
    • 8 metres away from another dwelling, school, store or shop (excluding where such dwelling or building is occupied exclusively by the property owner or keeper of the Animals; and
    • 2 metres away from each property line
  • All backyard hen coops must be kept in a clean and sanitary condition at all times, free of vermin, obnoxious smells and substances and in good repair
  • All refuse resulting from the keeping of hens shall be contained in air-tight containers in such a manner as to prevent odours and shall be disposed of in a manner that will not create a public nuisance or health hazard
  • Backyard hens must be provided with food and clean water at all times, shelter, light and ventilation to assist in keeping the hens in good health. Food and water shall be kept in solid, rodent-proof containers. Uneaten feed shall be removed in a timely manner.
  • All backyard hens must be kept securely in a coop or outdoor run at all times. Backyard hens are not permitted to run at large.

Properties may be inspected at any reasonable time by a municipal law enforcement officer for the purposes of investigating a complaint and/or to ensure compliance with the by-law.
