BRAMPTON, ON — The City of Brampton has launched the Garden Suite Grant Program, aimed to provide homeowners in Brampton with rebates on municipal fees for building and registering garden suites. This initiative is part of the city-wide Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for Affordable Housing.
A garden suite is an Additional Residential Unit (ARU) that is detached from the primary residence and located in the rear or side yard of a single detached, semi-detached or townhouse unit. By incentivizing the creation of garden suites, the City aims to encourage gentle densification and expand Brampton’s affordable housing supply.

Under the Garden Suite Grant Program, homeowners who complete and register a garden suite will be eligible for rebates on certain municipal fees. These rebates will be provided once Planning staff confirm that the garden suite is complete and registered with the City’s Building Division.
The following municipal fees are eligible to be refunded by the City through the Garden Suite Grant Program:
- Registration Fee
- Building Permit Fee
- Custom Home Review Fee
- Educational Development Charges
Homeowners can submit an online application form or apply in-person at Service Brampton and provide a copy of the Registration Permit to be eligible. The program is funded through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund grant and will remain available until the end of 2026.
Benefits of garden suites:
- Provide additional housing for caregivers or family members.
- Create an extra income stream for homeowners, helping them remain in their homes longer.
- Reduce barriers to the development of additional residential units and increase the supply of diverse and affordable rental options in Brampton.
