Windstorms can be quite dangerous and may cause: flying debris, downed trees and power lines which can lead to power outages, property damage, and fatalities.
Potential dangers in a windstorm:
- Debris and falling trees cause severe damage to buildings and vehicles, and can cause fatalities.
- Fallen power lines can cause widespread power outages.
- Exterior load bearing walls of buildings can fail, which results in the collapse of the roof.
- Loose window frames are especially vulnerable during severe windstorms.
- Light metal buildings, such as garden sheds, can collapse completely.
How to prepare for high winds or a windstorm:
- Keep a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit in an easy-to-reach location. This kit contains commonly needed supplies for a family for up to three days.
- Secure your patio furniture and other loose items.
- Avoid parking directly under trees.
- Trim trees and shrubs and cut down dead trees to reduce the danger of them falling during a storm.
- Put your car in the garage, shelter pets and livestock, and continue to monitor weather conditions.
What to do during a windstorm:
- Remain calm.
- Stay indoors and shelter-in-place. Move away from windows or glass doors and exterior walls.
- If you are outdoors, move into a safe building and avoid downed power lines.
- If you are driving, pull off the road and stop away from trees and power lines.
- Avoid overpasses. If possible, walk quickly into a safe building.

After a windstorm:
- Inspect any damage that may have occurred to your property and contact your insurance provider if necessary.
- Pick up debris scattered by the wind.
- Never touch downed power lines or electrical installations.
