BRAMPTON, ON – Areas within the City of Brampton are experiencing localized flooding due to heavy rainfall. As the City continues to monitor and respond to flash flooding, avoid driving in the following areas, if possible:
- Heritage Road between Wanless Drive and Embleton Road remains closed; staff are monitoring and will reopen when safe and passable.
To remain safe from flooding and hazardous conditions, the City of Brampton is sharing safety tips for residents.
City flood operations
The City is actively monitoring and clearing catchbasins, outfalls and inlets. Operations Maintenance Inspectors are tracking road conditions and water levels, prioritizing flood-prone locations and high-traffic zones. Crews are systematically inspecting and clearing debris from catch basins, with staff responding promptly to public reports of blocked drains or standing water.
Due to rising temperatures, snow is melting and may cause water to pond near the curb line and at the end of driveways. Ponded water may remain on properties for up to 72 hours after rainfall ends. If it persists beyond that, residents should notify the City.
The City is working with Brampton Emergency Management Office to assess conditions and coordinate response efforts. City facilities are being regularly inspected for any issues related to the rainfall.
What Brampton residents can do before flooding happens
- Keep eavestrough, roof downspouts and catch basins clear, if safe to do so.
- Check that sump pumps and backwater valves are in working order.
- Check with your insurance provider to establish what kind of coverage you have for damage due to flooding.
If flooding occurs
- Any abnormal accumulation of water (high water levels in rivers, large pools of water on residential streets because of blocked drains) should be reported to the City of Brampton Call Centre by calling 3-1-1 or 905.874.2000 (outside Brampton).
- River flooding – residents should stay away from rivers and creeks that are flooded. Ensure that children and pets are kept away from the potential hazard. Report flooding to 3-1-1.
- Do not walk or drive through flooded roads – water accumulation can compromise the safety of sidewalks and streets.
In a flood situation
- Have a 72-hour emergency kit easily accessible.
- Listen to a battery-powered radio for flood or storm updates.
- Stay on firm ground. Moving water that is six inches deep can sweep you off your feet.
- Wear gloves and boots at all times to avoid touching anything with bare hands or feet.
- Go to higher ground.
- Watch for debris, like branches and broken glass, when you come back after the flood.
- Keep yourself, family and pets away from flood waters.
In a flood situation, do not:
- Attempt to enter closed buildings, secured areas or bridges as they are closed off for a reason.
- Put valuable items and appliances in the basement where they are more likely to be flooded.
- Enter standing water, as it may be electrically charged, and stay away from downed power lines.
- If water in the basement has risen above electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, or other electrical systems, do not enter the basement until the power has been disconnected.
- Do not walk or drive through floodwaters, as they can pose a risk of drowning and can quickly erode roads and structures.
If in danger, residents should call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. To report localized flooding on municipal roads and blocked storm sewer grates, call 3-1-1. To report any damage to private property caused by the flooding, residents should contact their insurance company as soon as possible. Residents can also review the residential
guide on flood prevention and recovery for more information.
