BRAMPTON, ON — Effective April 1, 2025, Brampton residents will see a 3.4% increase in the stormwater charge on their Region of Peel water bill.
Stormwater, commonly known as runoff, refers to rain and melted snow that flow from properties onto streets and into Brampton’s extensive stormwater system. This system includes over 2,014 kilometres of storm sewer pipes and 193 stormwater ponds, all designed to protect residents, properties and the environment from the adverse effects of stormwater runoff.
Stormwater infrastructure plays a crucial role in public safety by reducing flooding and erosion while filtering pollutants before water is released into local streams and Lake Ontario. The infrastructure within the system has a finite lifespan and requires regular maintenance and eventual replacement.
The stormwater charge serves as a dedicated funding source, ensuring the continued functionality of Brampton’s stormwater drainage system while supporting long-term infrastructure planning and future repairs. This user-pay approach aligns charges with the amount of stormwater a property produces, promoting fairness and accountability.
Revenue from the stormwater charge will be allocated to essential initiatives, including operations, maintenance, monitoring, rehabilitation, replacement and capital investments to increase capacity and improve water quality. Specific activities include cleaning catchbasins, repairing and replacing storm sewers, maintaining stormwater ponds and preserving creek and riverbanks.
Is your home rain ready?
Residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to prepare their homes for rainfall:
- Relocate important documents and keepsakes from basements or store them on elevated shelves.
- Clear catchbasins of litter and debris to ensure proper drainage.
- Ensure yards slope away from foundations to prevent water accumulation near homes.
- Install backflow preventer valves on sanitary and/or foundation drains to prevent sewer backups.
- Keep basement floor drains unobstructed.
