Brampton, ON – The City of Brampton is conducting a review of the 10 municipal ward boundaries that make up the city. As the population grows and evolves, the City aims to establish fair and equitable wards with a balanced representation of the citizens at the Council table.

The review is based on guiding principles, including effective representation, representation by population, population trends and growth, physical boundaries (natural and built) and the protection of established neighbourhoods and communities.

Two boundary realignment options are proposed for consideration. Resident feedback is essential to shaping ward boundaries that reflect the unique needs and perspectives of Brampton’s diverse community. Everyone is encouraged to participate and have their voices heard.

Have your say

Residents are invited to participate in a survey and attend in-person engagement opportunities to select their preferred option.

The options under consideration

Option One

Option one increases the size of wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. It significantly reduces the size of Ward 6. Ward 9 remains the same and the size of Ward 10 is reduced.

This option provides a more balanced population distribution amongst wards, ensuring equitable and fair representation.

Option Two

Option Two increases the size of Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. It decreases the size of Wards 6 and 10; Ward 9 remains the same.

This option also achieves a more balanced population distribution, ensuring equitable and fair representation.

What is a ward?

A ward is a geographical division of a municipality for administrative and political purposes. The City of Brampton is comprised of 10 wards and City Council is composed of the Mayor and 10 Councillors. Brampton’s 10 wards are grouped into pairings, and each ward pairing is represented by two elected Councillors who serve on City Council. Residents vote for candidates to represent their ward on issues such as public services and community development. The Mayor is elected by voters from all parts of the city. Ward boundaries are established based on population and geography to ensure fair representation.

How do I find out which ward I live in?

Residents can visit the City’s interactive map to find out which ward they live in. Simply zoom in to the map or enter your address in the search bar to find your ward.

What is a ward boundary review?

A ward boundary review is an exercise to assess whether the existing wards constitute an equitable system of representation, and if not, to propose alternatives.

Why is it important?

The process ensures that each ward has equitable representation based on population changes, projected growth, and other relevant factors.

What are the main objectives of the review?

  • Effective Representation: Ensuring voters are equally represented to the greatest extent possible.
  • Responding to Growth and Change: Adjusting to population growth and urban development that may affect ward boundaries.
  • Additional Factors: Considering community interests, geographic features, and other relevant factors to ensure that ward compositions make sense from a community perspective.

How does this affect Brampton voters?

Brampton voters vote by ward in municipal elections, so any changes to the boundaries may affect which ward they will vote in during the next municipal election, which will take place on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Is the City reducing the number of wards and Councillors?

The City is not reducing the number of wards, nor is it reducing the number of council representatives. Similarly, the number of wards and council representatives is not being increased.

What happens after the review is complete?

Following this public consultation phase, resident feedback will be shared with Council in a Council Workshop. Staff will present a report at Committee of Council in the new year seeking a decision on the next steps.
