​​BRAMPTON, ON— The City of Brampton is providing an update on the next steps in the Residential Rental Licensing Pilot Program (RRL) since the initial registration fee waiver period has closed.

From July 1 to September 30, the RRL registration fee will be discounted 50 per cent from $300 to $150. To date, close to 2,000 registrations have been received. As part of the pilot, landlords in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are required to register their rental units to help create a safer community for everyone. 

In the next phase of the pilot, the City will begin implementing measures to ensure compliance. City Council endorsed fines for non-compliance with the RRL pilot program as follows:

• $600 for a first offence
• $900 for a second offence 
• $1,200 for a third and subsequent offences

In addition, Brampton Enforcement and By-law Services and Fire Prevention will continue to focus efforts on community education and conducting inspections in response to residents' concerns or where there have been previous concerns of compliance with property minimum maintenance standards and or fire safety. 

The City of Brampton will provide updates on the pilot program as it continues to be implemented. 

About the Residential Rental Licensing Pilot Program 

The City of Brampton is committed to creating safer places for renters to call home. Brampton’s Residential Rental Licensing Pilot Program aims to maintain neighbourhood character, enforce property standards and uphold the Ontario Fire Code for safety to create safer places for renters to call home. Landlords in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 with one to four rental units must obtain a licence per property.

If in need of By-law Enforcement assistance, residents can submit and track service requests by calling 3-1-1, through the 311 Brampton app or by visiting Service Brampton online at 311brampton.ca. In-person services are available at multiple locations, visit the web page for locations and hours.

Recently, the City of Brampton announced the hiring of 38 additional By-law Enforcement Officers and two support positions who will support responding to service requests, enhancing the City’s enforcement capacity.
