BRAMPTON, ON (April 20, 2022) – Downtown Brampton is undergoing a transformation, beginning this week with the first phase of construction by the Region of Peel to replace watermain and sanitary sewers in the area.
During Stage 1 of construction, the Region’s contractor will occupy the two middle lanes of Queen Street East, and Queen Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction from approximately Main Street to the GO Tracks east of Chapel Street. This traffic control setup will be modified for construction of the underground infrastructure and surface works. However, one lane of traffic will be maintained on Queen Street at all times.
On-street parking in the active construction area will be unavailable on Queen Street. Free parking will be available in the municipal parking garages: Nelson Square, Market Square, West Tower, City Hall and John Street.
The Region will ensure businesses have access for delivery at all times through the laneways behind buildings. In this first stage, Harmsworth Lane and Garden Square Lane can be utilized for facilitating deliveries and loading or unloading for businesses. The City is also looking at dedicating a loading/unloading zone on Main Street South between John Street and Queen Street, which will assist with pickups for restaurants and food businesses.
Pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses, and sidewalks will remain open. There will be some short-term work within the boulevards, followed by a complete replacement of curbs and sidewalks, when pedestrians will be directed to the other side of the street.

These enhancements are a key part of driving the City’s Integrated Downtown Plan (IDP), a roadmap for action coordinating Downtown Brampton’s many ongoing initiatives and infrastructure projects that is anticipated to guide future growth and strategic investment.
