​BRAMPTON, ON (March 11, 2021) – On Friday, March 12, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown will meet virtually with Brampton MPs and MPPs to advocate for key priorities, to drive change and secure the City’s future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the importance of Brampton’s key priorities, such as health care, transit and economic recovery. Through the Federal and Provincial pre-budget consultations, the City of Brampton is advocating for timely and equitable funding to secure the City’s immediate and long-term requirements, while seeking close partnerships and cooperation.

The City of Brampton recently requested extending the Safe Restart Agreement to the end of 2021 and appreciates the recent Provincial announcement of $150 M in additional funding to help municipal transit systems. This results in total of $650 M still available to municipalities up to December 31, 2021, with extensions to December 2022, granted on a case-by-case basis.

Building on Federal funding secured in 2020, the City of Brampton is requesting investments in strategic green infrastructure transit projects to create jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as a new transit maintenance and storage facility, its electrification and a zero emissions fleet.

Immediate Provincial funding to bridge Brampton's health care gap, as compared to the rest of Ontario, is critical for a range of health services including: disease prevention and health promotion; community and public health programs; home care; and hospital services at Brampton Civic Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

With more than 700,000 residents, Brampton is Canada’s ninth largest City with a diverse and rapidly growing population. Skills development remains at a key priority for the City of Brampton for job growth to build capacity in technology and innovation-driven industries.

Pre-budget submissions highlights include:
• Immediate and equitable Provincial heath care funding to end “hallway medicine” in Brampton
• Provincial funding for Riverwalk to unlock downtown Brampton and support sustainable growth and development
• Federal funding for a third transit maintenance and storage facility for electric transit vehicles
• Support for an inter-regional, higher-order transit network by investing in the Queen Street BRT project
• Investment in the Hurontario-Main Street LRT extension while the environmental assessment study is being completed
• Accelerate GO Transit rail expansion and funding for all day, two-way service with Metrolinx
• Provincial legislation to establish BramptonU by passing the Brampton University Act and investments in post-secondary education and critical innovation and technology infrastructure
