BRAMPTON, ON (September 26, 2024) – The City of Brampton continues to be a leader in planning and development efficiency, earning a fourth overall ranking (“combined ranking”) in the 2024 Building Industry and Land Development Association’s (BILD) Municipal Benchmarking Study, with special recognition for its outstanding "Planning Achievements."

In terms of average timelines, Brampton is tied for third place with14.1 months to process development applications. When comparing the size of cities, specifically those with a population over 250,000, Brampton ranks first in approval speed.

Brampton has made significant progress in streamlining its development approval processes since the last iteration of this study (2022). The study shows Brampton has shaved five months off development approval times, a 26% reduction in two years and continuously improving from twelfth position out of 15 municipalities in 2020. This is a substantial efficiency gain that aligns with forecasts by City staff (February 2023), estimating a 25% reduction in processing timelines.  The newly released results confirm that Brampton has exceeded those projections, an accomplishment reflecting the City’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Key Highlights:

  • Brampton ranks fourth overall in a comprehensive study of 16 municipalities across three categories: fees, approval timelines and planning features.
  • Brampton’s overall ranking in BILD’s bi-annual study has improved significantly from twelfth to fourth since 2020.
  • Brampton is tied for third fastest of the 15 municipalities studied for processing application timelines (14.1 months) and the fastest turnaround time in Peel Region by 11 months.
  • Brampton’s processing times hold the top spot among cities with a population over 250,000.

Building on Recent Housing Achievements

In addition to these planning milestones, Brampton has partnered with the federal government to fast-track the construction of 24,000 new homes over the next decade as part of the Housing Accelerator Fund. This $114 million investment will help address housing affordability and meet the growing demand for homes.

In February 2024, Brampton received $25.5 million from the Ontario government’s Building Faster Fund for surpassing its 2023 housing targets. This achievement highlights Brampton’s leadership in addressing the housing crisis with over 7,000 new residential units created in the city over the last year.

These initiatives underscore Brampton’s broader commitment to building complete communities and meeting the region’s housing needs while further solidifying its leadership in planning and development across the GTA.
