BRAMPTON, ON (December 15, 2023) – The City of Brampton is taking steps to make neighbourhoods and their streets safer with its new Neighbourhood Speed Safety Zones Pilot Project. In select Neighbourhood Speed Safety Zones, a new, lower speed limit will be set at 40 kilometres per hour, emphasizing a commitment to the safety and well-being of Brampton residents.
Local residential streets serve as a safe place for families to play and enjoy an active lifestyle. This initiative aims to keep residential streets safe and comfortable for all road users. The Neighbourhood Speed Safety Zones Pilot Project is taking place in five neighbourhoods across the city, including:
- Royal Palm Drive,
- Downtown Brampton – Southwest Quadrant includes east of McMurchy Avenue South, south of Queen Street West, west of Main Street South, north of Elgin Drive,
- Elbern Markell Drive and Royal West Drive,
- Westbrook Drive, Don Minaker Drive and Riverstone Drive, and
- Mount Royal Circle neighbourhood includes east of Airport Road, south of Mayfield Road, west of Goreway Drive and north of Countryside Drive.
The City conducted 278 studies on local residential streets to better understand how traffic impacts communities. This pilot project implements measures to deter through-vehicle traffic and reduce excess speeding.
The pilot project will be closely monitored and assessed to determine its effectiveness in enhancing neighbourhood traffic management.
The City of Brampton employs a range of traffic management tools to further its commitment to road safety. These tools include:
- The deployment of 50 Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras installed citywide,
- Establishing 180 Community Safety Zones to create safe and secure environments for its residents, and
- The RoadWatch program, a collaborative program by the municipalities of Peel Region and Peel Regional Police, encourages residents to report dangerous and aggressive drivers.
