Infrastructure Upgrades. Wider Sidewalks. Enhanced Public Spaces.
BRAMPTON, ON (February 3, 2022) – Downtown Brampton is undergoing a transformation, beginning this month with construction by the Region of Peel to replace watermain and sanitary sewers in the area, followed by the City’s work to replace and widen sidewalks, and repair and resurface roads.
Construction is set to commence at the end of January, and is anticipated to be completed in 2025, weather permitting and with consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Region of Peel has shared the general staging plans for construction. Residents and businesses can review the information here and submit questions or comments.
During construction on Queen Street, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction. During construction on Main Street, one direction of traffic will be maintained only in one direction. Pedestrian access will generally be maintained to all businesses, and sidewalks will remain open. There will be some short-term work within the boulevards, followed by a complete replacement of curbs and sidewalks, when pedestrians will be directed to the other side of the street.
These enhancements are a key part of driving the City’s Integrated Downtown Plan, which guides Downtown Brampton’s many ongoing initiatives and infrastructure projects that will spur growth and investment.

Downtown streetscaping
In full coordination with the Region’s downtown infrastructure work, the City is moving forward with streetscaping initiatives that include replacing existing sidewalks with stone pavers and resurfacing roads with widened sidewalks on both sides of Queen and Main Streets. This approximately $16.6 million investment will serve to create quality urban spaces for commercial activity, pedestrians and cyclists and form active linkages between Etobicoke and Fletchers Creeks, and create an enhanced pedestrian realm in the downtown core.
Downtown Brampton Projects Centre
The Downtown Brampton Projects Centre (DBPC) is now open virtually. City staff are ready to assist downtown businesses and residents, and to continue delivering programs and initiatives to revitalize the downtown. Peel Region staff will also be available during the construction.
Projects that will be supported through the DBPC include the Region’s watermain and sanitary sewer replacement project and the My Main Street program. A Downtown Coordinator will assist local businesses, the Downtown Brampton BIA, and elected officials to implement small scale projects and direct queries to the appropriate City departments.

About the Integrated Downtown Plan
The Integrated Downtown Plan (IDP) is a roadmap for action – coordinating Downtown Brampton’s many ongoing initiatives and infrastructure projects. It is anticipated to guide future growth and strategic investment through 2051.
The guiding principles of the IDP are inclusivity, innovation and sustainability. It will help coordinate infrastructure upgrades, urban design, land use, and programming interventions - positioning Brampton as a pivotal economic driver, regional cultural hub, and Innovation District.
