BRAMPTON, ON – The Honourable Steven Del Duca, Minister of Economic Development and Growth, announced today funding for a new pilot project to test electric battery-powered buses in Brampton and York Region. The announcement was made at the York Region Administrative Centre in Newmarket.
Brampton Transit, in partnership with the
Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC), acted as lead transit agency in the planning and execution of this trial since 2015. This national trial is a
global first-of-its-kind consortium-based project.
By 2019, Brampton will have the single largest global deployment of standardized and fully interoperable battery electric buses and high powered overhead on-route charging systems; with eight electric buses (six by New Flyer Industries, and two by Nova Bus) and four charging systems (three by ABB Group and one by Siemens).
Brampton Transit is committed to promoting new and innovative solutions to providing a high-quality service that reduces the City’s overall carbon footprint and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Brampton Transit currently operates 422 buses in its fleet, including 110 Züm bus rapid transit vehicles. Züm buses are diesel-hybrid electric delivering a reduction of approximately 3,500 tonnes of GHG per year when compared to full diesel.
In 2017, Brampton Transit’s ridership increased by 18% over the previous year and based on its growth, the fleet is expected to surpass 800 vehicles by 2031.
