BRAMPTON, ON – As the holiday season approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in the festivities. Brampton Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to stay vigilant and safe amidst the hustle and bustle. Fire safety is critical year-round, but the holidays bring unique risks—from fresh Christmas trees to decorative lights and cooking distractions.
Holiday safety tips
Here are essential tips to keep your family safe and make this holiday season memorable for all the right reasons:
Christmas trees
- If you’re choosing a fresh tree, ensure you’re watering it daily to prevent it from drying out.
- Place your tree in a sturdy, non-tip stand and keep it away from exits and heat sources such as fireplaces or radiators.
- Remove any shedding needles and discard the tree promptly after the holidays.
Cooking safety
- Stay alert! Avoid distractions and leaving the kitchen unattended while you’re cooking.
- Keep flammable items at a safe distance away from the stove.
Decorative lights and electrical safety
- Use outdoor-rated LED lights for exterior displays and nail-free clips to keep them secure.
- Inspect your light strands before use. Discard any frayed or damaged sets.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for light strands to ensure proper use.
- Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords and make sure to turn off or unplug all lights before leaving home or going to bed.
Smoke and CO alarms
- Test smoke alarms monthly and install them on every storey of your home.
- Place carbon monoxide (CO) alarms beside all sleeping areas and test them monthly.
- Replace any alarms that are over ten years old.
Portable heaters and candles
- Keep portable heaters and candles at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) away from flammable objects.
- Candles require adult supervision and safe and sturdy candle holders.
- Battery-operated candles offer a safer alternative to open flames.Blow out your candles before leaving home or going to bed.
Lithium-ion devices
- Avoid overcharging devices and store batteries away from flammable materials.
- Always use the battery designed for the device and use the proper charging cord or power adaptor that came with the device.
- Avoid charging devices under your pillow, on your bed or your couch.
Have a home escape plan
- Develop a home escape plan and practise it at least twice a year with the members of your household.
- Ensure your plan has two exits per room and a have a meeting place in front of your home.
- Identify the members of your household that may require assistance in an emergency.
