- provide 43,000 sq.ft administrative office support space
Construction is anticipated to begin late 2024 and conclude in 2027.
Project Details
Brampton Transit is the fastest-growing big city transit system in Canada, with ridership significantly outpacing population growth. Brampton Transit was also the first transit system in the country to not only fully recover, but also exceed its pre-pandemic ridership levels. Transit’s new maintenance and storage facility is essential to support the continued growth of the bus fleet.
Located at Highway 50 and Cadetta Road, the facility will be named the Cadetta Johnston Transit Facility in honour of the Johnston family, who settled on these lands, and continues to occupy their family farm on the lands south of the property. The Johnston family’s historical ties to the area date back to the early 19th century and the facility’s commemorative naming recognizes their significant contributions.
The City of Brampton has successfully secured $175 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) towards the base phase one of the facility's construction. This includes over $69.9 million from the Government of Canada, $58.2 million from the Government of Ontario and $46.6 million from the City of Brampton. Additionally, Brampton City Council approved an additional $108.2 million in City funding to complete the design and construction of Phase One.
The first phase of the new facility will be designed to accommodate future electrification, pending additional funding. Brampton continues to advocate for full electrification of the third transit facility, a key initiative in the City’s broader environmental goals.
This project will be built to achieve 80% emissions reduction compared to a standard building code level designed facility, resulting in 1,320 tonnes of CO2e emissions being reduced per year and further supporting the City’s commitment as a Green City and Brampton’s Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan.
