Project Overview
The City recently initiated a construction project to extend Cottrelle Boulevard from Goreway Drive to Humberwest Parkway. As part of this project, the City is retrofitting two existing stormwater ponds (Burrells Hollow Pond and Upper Ridge Pond) to reduce thermal pollution from warm stormwater runoff. The improvements to the ponds will help protect Redside Dace, which is an endangered fish protected under the Endangered Species Act. By deepening the ponds, colder water will be released into the receiving watercourse to protect the habitat of temperature-sensitive species such as the Redside Dace.
Pond Information
Both Burrells Hollow and Upper Ridge Pond drain to the Humber River. Burrells Hollow pond was built in 2006, collects runoff from an area of 19 hectares and services over 225 homes and businesses. The pond is currently storing about 1,600 cubic metres of dirt, sand and sediment. This is equal to over 900 pickup truck cargo beds.
Upper Ridge Pond was built in 2005, collects runoff from an area of 52 hectares and services over 442 homes and businesses. The pond is currently storing about 250 cubic metres of dirt, sand and sediment. This is equal to over 150 pickup truck cargo beds.
Project Timeline
Construction will begin in the summer of 2024 and will be completed by the summer of 2025.
Pond Tour
Two Stormwater Pond Tours was held on June 26 and 27, 2024 with over 30 community members attending. Thank you to all that attended.
