Planning to Dig?
Before you dig – whether planting a tree, installing a fence or starting any outdoor project – you or your contractor must contact Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255, at least five business days in advance. Ontario One Call coordinates with local utility providers to safely mark buried infrastructure like electricity lines, water pipes and gas lines at no cost to you. The markings help ensure you avoid damaging essential services and maintain public safety. Locates are generally only valid for 60 days from the day you receive your locate, so plan your project timeline accordingly.
Contractors: Contact Ontario One Call Before You Dig

Non-Compliance
Anyone not following safe digging practices and who hits underground infrastructure may be held liable for damages. If you suspect non-compliance with Ontario One Call requirements, you can submit a complaint with them here. Ontario One Call imposes a $10,000 administrative penalty for digging or excavating without marked locates. Additional charges and fines may also be issued by the Ministry of Labour and/or the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).
Emergencies
For emergencies requiring immediate assistance from police, fire or ambulance services (e.g. a gas leak), call 9-1-1.
What the Paint Colors Mean:
When utility lines are marked, each color has a meaning:
Red: Electric
Blue: Water
Orange: Communication (phone, internet)
Yellow: Gas, Oil
Green: Sewer, Stormwater
White: Planned Dig Site

Painted markings on sidewalks, boulevards or lawn edges identify underground infrastructure and are placed following a locate request.
