Prevent Bathroom Exhaust Fan Fires

Page Banner

The three most common causes of a bathroom exhaust fan fires are:

  • Failing to clean the fan.
  • Running the fan for extended periods of time and overheating the motor.
  • Faulty wiring.

Maintaining Bathroom Exhaust Fans Tips:

  • Inspect and clean all bathroom exhaust fans regularly. Read the use and care instruction from the manufacturer before cleaning the fan.
  • For bathroom exhaust fans that are not easily accessible for regular cleaning, appear to have heat damage or use blades that do not rotate freely – they should be replaced with thermally protected units. Hire a licenced electrician to replace any exhaust fan.
  • Bathroom exhaust fans should not be used for prolonged periods of time and should be turned off when you leave the house. It is recommended to install a timer switch to a bathroom exhaust fan, so it will turn off automatically after a pre-determined time.
