On a residential property, accessory buildings and structures are anything that is constructed in the yard and unattached to the home. Accessory buildings and structures may include: detached garages, sheds, gazebos, playgrounds and dog houses.
The City of Brampton provides regulations surrounding accessory buildings and structures with regards to the number permitted, location and dimensions. These regulations exist in order to uphold community standards.
Dimensions
General rules for accessory buildings on a residential property are as follows:
- A maximum of two accessory buildings are permitted, as long as the combined area for both does not exceed 20 square metres (215 square feet). An individual accessory building cannot exceed 15 square metres (161 square feet).
- An accessory building must be at least 0.6 metres (2’) from the property line on all sides.
- Recreational/play structures must be at least 1.2 metres (4’) from the property lines.
- An accessory building cannot exceed 3 metres in height (9’9”).
- Accessory buildings may only be located in a rear yard.
- Accessory buildings are not permitted to be used for the occupation of people.
Permits
Some accessory structures (i.e. swimming pools, decks, playgrounds etc.) require a permit, and are subject to a specific set of requirements. Rules may also vary depending on the lot type.
