BRAMPTON, ON (January 13, 2025) – January is Tamil Heritage Month, a time to reflect on the rich history, culture, resiliency and strength of Tamil communities across Canada. As home to a large Tamil diaspora, the City of Brampton recognizes Canada’s Tamil community and their significant social, cultural and economic contributions.

Today also marks the start of Thai Pongal, a multi-day Hindu festival celebrated by Tamils. The festival signifies the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai and celebrates prosperity and the arrival of a new season.

As part of Tamil Heritage Month, the City of Brampton invites residents to celebrate Tamil culture and traditions on January 25. Held in partnership with the Brampton Tamil Association and Brampton Tamil Seniors Association and generously sponsored by Algoma University, the event will kick off with a community flag raising at City Hall in Ken Whillans Square, followed by a reception featuring live performances, musical and dance showcases and free traditional Tamil cuisine it the City Hall Atrium & Conservatory.
