Government of Canada $1.72M investment will help build 176 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
BRAMPTON, ON (February 4, 2023) – The Ministry of Natural Resources announced yesterday the City of Brampton would receive $1.72M in funding for Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure from the Federal Government’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).
This funding will help the City of Brampton build 176 level 2 and level 3 fast-charge Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, along with the associated underground infrastructure and utility upgrades. The EV charging stations will be installed and operational by December of 2024.
In June 2019, Brampton City Council declared a climate emergency to reaffirm the City of Brampton’s commitment to protecting our eco-systems, and our community from climate change.
In September 2020, Council endorsed the Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan to drive innovation, employment and economic development while achieving the City’s environmental and climate change goals, along with its associated social benefits.
Developing a green fleet is part of the City’s fleet modernization strategy. These EV charging stations will help the City of Brampton achieve this strategy’s goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fuel costs, enhancing operational efficiency and providing service excellence.
The City of Brampton is a leader in environmental innovation and improving sustainability. In 2022, Brampton received $15.7M in Federal funding to support a number of upgrades to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and increase the energy efficiency of Susan Fennell Sportsplex.
Work involves upgrading the facility’s refrigeration plants, HVAC systems, building automation system and lighting. It will also include the installation of a battery-energy storage system to offset electricity costs, and a geothermal system to heat and cool the facility using the earth as a medium of heat transfer. These retrofits will reduce natural gas consumption and significantly reduce GHG emissions to transform the Sportsplex to a Net Zero facility.
Brampton was also one of the first municipalities to use Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) in 2021. This was the largest single global deployment to date of standardized and fully interoperable BEBs and high-powered overhead on-route charging systems, as part of the Pan-Canadian BEB Demonstration and Integration Trial.
Brampton was the first municipality in Ontario to use an electric-powered fire truck in 2022. The City of Brampton also released a Sustainable Fleet Strategy in 2022 to further reduced Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and air pollutant emissions.
The City has already installed more than 65 public charging stations for electric vehicles across community centres, facilities and administrative buildings. Funding from ZEVIP will help the City to achieve a Zero Carbon transition in Brampton and a more sustainable future for residents.
