Once you have successfully submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email informing you that your application has been received.

Applicants will initially be reviewed and assessed in relation to the qualifications and experience outlined in the job advertisement. Applicants that most closely meet the qualifications and experience are selected to proceed to the next stage in the selection process.​

Selected applicants will be invited to complete a multiple-choice online situation judgement test (SJT). It is standardized approach that measures candidates and decision making in job relevant situations. Applicants who are successful will proceed to next stage in the process. ​​Applicants who successfully meet the qualifying score for Situation Judgement Testing will be invited to participate in a 1 hour Structured Behavioural Interview with two panel members comprising of one Human Resources Representative and a member from the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services management team. 

Applicants that successfully pass both the Situation Judgment Test and Structured behavioural interview will proceed to the next stage. 

Note: Applicants may be asked to bring further documentation if required.

Candidates that successfully meet the cut-off score for Situational Judgement Testing and Structured Behavioural Interview will then be assessed for optimal fit with organizational goals. ​

Pre-employment checks will be conducted for shortlisted candidates and include the following: 

  • Vulnerable Criminal Record Search (must be provided at this stage)
  • Education Verification
  • Professional References
  • Any additional employment verifications specific to the job requirements 

All pre-employment checks must be met in order to proceed to Step 7 ​​​

Once all the conditions of employment have been satisfied an offer of employment or an 18 month conditional offer will be extended. This will be followed up with a written offer letter and all the necessary instructions and documents to get you set up as a new City of Brampton employee.​

All newly hired Firefighters will commence a 14 week training program at our location 129 Glidden Road, Brampton, Ontario.​​​​​

Should an applicant be successful in the selection process, they will be asked to submit a Criminal Records Check, which must be cleared by the City of Brampton before any firm offer of employment is extended to the applicant.

Note: Getting a Criminal Records Check document from your local police department may take some time. You can start this process sooner but doing so is completely voluntary.

There are no volunteer Firefighter opportunities within Brampton Fire & Emergency Services.​

OAFI Candidate Testing requires candidates to complete a hearing and vision assessment.​

Appicants must be between 18 and 60 years of age.​

The mandatory retirement age is 60.​

    • Stage One - Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test™ Stage Two - Hearing Assessment

  • High School Diploma;
  • Graduate of the Pre-Service Fire Fighter Education & Training Program or NFPA 1001 - Fire Fighter I & II Certified;
  • Valid Ontario Class “DZ” Drivers’ license (by the interview stage);

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code;

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, function, installation, maintenance and operation of the following systems: sprinkler systems, standpipe and hose systems, fire alarm and voice communication systems, commercial cooking equipment ventilation and various fire protection systems;

  • Current truck and coach technician’s licence (310T);
  • Current automotive service technician’s licence (310S);
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement;
  • 5 years experience diagnosing and repairing problems on heavy vehicles and equipment;
  • 5 years experience diagnosing and repairing problems on air and hydraulic systems;
  • Demonstrated customer service skills including ability to provide technical guidance;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment;
  • Demonstrated communications skills, both written and verbal;

  • Formal education in Public Fire and Life Safety Education is required, certification as a Public Fire and Life Safety Educator is preferred;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Fire and Emergency Services functions is preferred, prior experience is an asset;
  • Must possess valid and current First Aid and CPR qualifications;
  • Experience and/or training in media relations, marketing and sales are strong assets;

The City of Brampton hires the best qualified candidates for the job by gathering factual information about an applicant so that we can objectively assess his/her ability to do the job. This is achieved by asking specific types of questions called behavioural interview questions. Behavioural based interviewing is based on the concept that past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour. Our goal is to select the people who have the skills and experience to meet the requirements and expectations of the position.

The City of Brampton suggests that you invest time researching how to appropriately respond to these types of questions. Here is an example of a behavioural based question and a suggested strategy of how to respond:

Question: Describe a recent situation in which you had to overcome an obstacle to achieve a particular outcome.

Response: Using a strategy known as the STAR interviewing response technique your response should follow this format:

S Situation: Describe the specific circumstances of the situation. Do not be general.

T Task: Describe your specific role or involvement in the situation. What were you personally responsible for?

A Action: Describe what specific action you took in that situation.

R Result: Describe how the situation ended up. What did you accomplish through your action? What did you learn?

Try to use work related examples to answer these types of questions. ​​​
