The City assembles parks and open spaces through both purchase and through dedication, in conjunction with the development process. Parkland purchases are funded by cash-in-lieu of parkland (CIL) collected from development applications, under the terms set out in the
Parkland Dedication By-law. The Park Planning & Development Section, working in conjunction with the Parks Projects & Central Operations Section deliver approximately 20 hectares (50 acres) of new parkland to City residents, each year.
In addition to securing parkland for active recreation, the City seeks to protect Natural Heritage System (NHS) lands (e.g valleylands, tableland woodlots, wetlands, etc.) which are normally conveyed to the City, for conservation purposes, through the development process. These natural areas are managed by the City for their long-term protection and sustainability.
Parkland Service Levels
The City of Brampton strives to meet and exceed its park service levels. In 2017 with the endorsement of the Parks & Recreation Master Plan, the City upgraded its parkland service level standards
The City's revised (2017) Parkland Service Level targets are as follows:
- City & Community Parkland: 0.9 hectares (2.2 acres) per 1,000 persons (combined)
- Neighbourhood Parkland:
0.7 hectares (1.7 acres) per 1,000 persons
- Total Parkland Service Level: 1.6 hectares (~ 4 acres) per 1,000 persons
*Note: NHS lands (noted above) do not generally contribute to parkland service levels. The service levels above reflect tableland parklands only.
