The current parks hierarchy is mostly appropriate for greenfield development as it relates to suburban neighbourhoods, and acknowledges a need for a more focused provision and supply target for intensifying areas.
To realize and achieve an urban parkland provision and updated parks hierarchy, this study will serve as a model that can be applied citywide when assessing urban parkland needs. A complete parkland study and strategy is required to develop a Parks Plan that will support and inform a new Parkland Dedication By-law and justify the alternative rate requirement.
As a vital accompanying component, the study requires establishing a revised urban parkland provision target, and will recommend solutions through the design, function, and implementation of new parks to address supply needs and inform acquisition strategies.
When complete, the Parks Plan will guide the long-term planning for new parks, expansion and improved access to existing parks including:
- A clear direction into how the City should plan for parkland in urban intensification areas, including establishing an updated supply target, and strategic framework for new typologies, acquisition and programming;
- A revised citywide parkland provision to provide for new parks, which would incorporate the urban parkland supply target; and,
- A citywide parkland supply assessment against the revised citywide parkland provision.
The Parkland Dedication Study and By-law Update will be prepared over the next six months with several opportunities for residents and stakeholder to share your input, the details of which will be posted in the coming months.

The 2018 to 2022 Term of Council (TOC) priorities inform our activities, decisions and budgets and help us to build a safe and inclusive City that is successful and sustainable. Launched in 2019, TOC has five strategic directions:

Brampton is building sustainability by improving transit and active transportation opportunities, focusing on energy efficiency, and revitalizing natural spaces and the urban tree canopy.
We know that every action is important in our approach to sustainability. This includes seasonal initiatives such as piloting a battery-powered “Green Trailer” for summer grass operations or introducing interim bike lanes to promote safe active transportation during the pandemic.
We are also committed to longer-term green initiatives such as the City’s first Community Energy and Emission Reduction Plan (CEERP); the City’s first Urban Forest Management Plan to support the Million Trees initiative; and the Eco Park Strategy to create an interconnected network of sustainable urban and natural/green spaces.
