The City of Brampton celebrated its 50th birthday on January 1, 2024!

The City collaborated with Canada’s Music Incubator Limited (CMI) to commission a special 50th birthday song. Written and performed by Brampton native Omega Mighty and composed and produced by Darryn DeSouza and Taabu.

A Look Back in Time

Brampton’s settlement was established in the early 1800s and was officially designated a city in 1974. Since then, Brampton has grown into a dynamic and vibrant city with a proud past and bright future. Learn more about Brampton here.

1818

James Ajetance, chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit, signs Treaty 19. Known as the “Ajetance Purchase,” the land in this treaty includes the land within Brampton’s modern borders.

1853

Brampton becomes a village with a population of 500.

1867

Brampton is selected as the “seat of Peel County.” This vite led to the local courthouse and jail being built in the community.

1873

Brampton becomes a town.

1874

First town election – John Haggert is elected first Mayor of Brampton.

1903

Gage Park becomes Brampton’s first municipal park.

1906

Carnegie Library is built on the southeast corner of Queen and Chapel Street, this building is an example of the classical Beaux Arts architecture style.

1920

First fire truck with an engine was used in Brampton.

1950

Brampton Memorial Area recreation centre is built.

1973

On June 29, 1973, Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited the Town of Brampton during their 10-day tour of Canada.

1974

Brampton was officially designated a City with a population of 88,820. The City is created from the Town of Brampton, half of Chinguacousy Township (including Bramalea), most of Toronto Gore Township, and a small of portion of the Town of Mississauga. The County of Peel becomes the Region of Peel.

1981

The City bought the Capitol Theatre, under councillor Diane Sutter, turning the former movie house and vaudevillian stage into a theatre for musical and performing arts, renamed to the Heritage Theatre.

1982

Carabram was founded after volunteers from different ethnic communities wanted to organize a festival celebrating diversity and cross-cultural friendship.

1991

New Brampton City Hall, designed by Architect Robert J. Posliff and constructed by Inzola Construction opened in June 15, 1991.

1999

Brampton begins celebrating the Millennium. The City of Brampton purchases historic house “Alderlea” from Branch 15 of Royal Canadian Legion.

2002

The City Council establishes the “Flower City Strategy” to promote a connection to its flower-growing heritage.

2003

The Flower City Parade and CeleBrampton are launched, to commemorate 150 years since the creation of Brampton as a village. Sesquicentennial Park in north Brampton is created as a lasting legacy.

2006

Brampton’s new state-of-the-art performing arts centre “Rose Theatre Brampton” opens.

2007

Brampton Civic Hospital was built to serve Brampton in place of Peel Memorial Hospital.
