Supporting Gender Equality
Women represent more than 50% of the Canadian population yet, according to Statistics Canada, women hold 35.6% of management positions and 30.9% of senior-level positions in the workforce. Gender parity at all levels of an organization ignites vibrant communities and active economies. The City of Brampton is committed to nurturing equity, diversity and inclusion to achieve meaningful participation of women across our organization. The City recognizes the importance of gender parity by celebrating the achievements of women on International Women’s Day, and Gender Equality Week.
To help combat systemic inequalities and demonstrate commitment to gender equity, the federal government introduced Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+). GBA+ is a rigorous analytical method that assesses systemic inequalities and examines how various identity and social factors influence and affect the experience of government initiatives for different people. The “plus” in GBA+ acknowledges that GBA goes beyond biological (sex) and socio-cultural (gender) differences.
Council Initiative
To align with the federal government and other Canadian Councils such as the City of Edmonton and City of Halifax— the City of Brampton Council passed motion C068-2023 on March 9, 2023, to support and empower women at the City of Brampton. Fall 2023 the City of Brampton launched mandatory GBA+ e-learning training for all people leaders including senior leaders and Council, which fulfilled the Council motion.
On December 6, 2023, Council passed another motion CW099-2023, extending the GBA+ training to all staff. The course aligns with the continued efforts of the Equity Office and Human Resources to support and provide empowerment opportunities for women, and gender parity within the City and on Council.
