An easy-to-remember telephone number that provides a single point of contact for citizens to request non-emergency local municipal government information, programs and services provided by the City of Brampton and Region of Peel

Information provided in Closed Session (sometimes referred to as “In Camera”) is confidential and provided to Members solely for the purpose of their review and decision-making. Members are required to maintain the confidentiality of these materials. Although they are listed on the regular Council agenda; they are not provided within the agenda. The Code of Conduct for Members of Council approved by City Council and administered by the Integrity Commissioner, reflects the City’s values and standards for professional conduct and behaviour

A Commissioner for Oaths is a person who is authorized to verify affidavits, declarations, and other legal documents

Any standing committee, functional, ad hoc, advisory committee, subcommittee or other committee or similar entity established for a specific purpose

A motion passed by a committee during a meeting and recommended for adoption by Council

When requesting to add, delete or defer items on an agenda, 2/3 of Council must provide consent for the request to be accepted.

A Constituency Assistant, referred to as a CA in this document, is the designated employee that supports Member(s) of Council

A company or group of people authorized to act as a single entity (legally a person) and recognized as such in law. The City of Brampton operating as The Corporation of the City Brampton is a Corporation for many business and legal purposes

The legislative body of the City consisting of all Council Members including the Mayor

Set out the responsibilities of Members of Council and are the main parliamentary authority governing meetings of Council and its committees. The procedures are found in Council’s Procedure By-law and the Municipal Act, 2001

The IPC is the agency established to work independently of the government to uphold and promote open government and the protection of personal privacy in Ontario

Digital Innovation & Information Technology, referred to as IT in this document, is a department responsible for all electronics and communications devices, including smartphones, iPads, computers and related software

The Office of the Integrity Commissioner acts as an independent key advisor to Council on a range of important issues, provides education and advice to Members of Council, and is responsible for presiding over complaints investigations related to Members

The Commissioner is appointed by and reports to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The Commissioner is independent of the government of the day and is accountable to uphold and protect access to information and privacy rights in Ontario

The City has established a Lobbyist Registry to enhance transparency by providing an ongoing record of persons who lobby City Hall and gifts received by the City’s public office holders, both elected and non-elected

Minutes are a record of the meeting, containing decisions, motions, votes, rulings and other information about proceedings. They are officially distributed to Members of Council with the subsequent meeting agendas. They are also provided to the public

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, referred to as MFIPPA in this document, is the legislation related to the access of information and protection of privacy

A proposal by a member to resolve and effect a decision at a Council meeting submitted to the Clerk in writing over the signature of the mover and seconder, being complete and correct

The Municipal Ombudsman is a discretionary position, acting independently and reporting to Council, to investigate any decision or recommendation made or act done or omitted in the course of the administration of the municipality

A results-based plan focusing on and engaging with employees as the precursor to delivering exceptional customer service and results for our community

Used to point out an error in procedure of a breach of the rules, calling attention to: a) any breach of the rules or order pursuant to this Procedure By-law; or b) any defect in the constituency of any meeting; or c) the use of improper offensive or abusive language; or d) notice of the fact that the matter under discussion is not within the scope of the proposed motion; or e) any other informality or irregularity in the proceedings of the meeting

Used to request immediate action on a matter affecting the rights and privileges of A) Council or Committee as a whole, or B) a Committee or Council Member. It is a procedure to call attention to a matter relating to: a) statements challenging the integrity of the Council, Committee or individual Members; or b) an individual Member (eg: statements made during the meeting naming that Member specifically, comments regarding a Member's character, an incorrect record of a Member's participation in a meeting contained in minutes approved in a Member's absence); or c) the rights and privileges of the Council or Committee (eg: the accuracy of published reports of its proceedings; the conduct of its officers, etc.)
